DICK AND CAREY MODEL

The Dick and Carey Model is used in instructional design to ensure a structured approach when developing instructional materials that will meet the learning objectives. It's a comprehensive model that allows for every aspect of the learning process to be analyzed so that the target audience receives an organized and effective learning module.

Steps involved in the Dick and Carey Model
1. Identify Instructional Goals: Defining what learners will be able to do at the end of the learning module.

2. Conduct Instructional Analysis: Identifying the learners, understanding the learners needs based on their prior knowledge and learning environment.

3. Identify Entry Behaviors: Assessing the needs of the learners to see their understanding of the material and what the focus needs to be when creating the course to see what motivates the learners.

4. Write Performance Objectives: Clearly identifying learning objectives and what the student will learn after completing the course.

5. Develop Assessment Instruments: Create assessments that will allow the appropriate measure of the achievements of the learners.

6. Develop Instructional Strategy: Specific learning strategies will be used to plan the teaching methods taking into account the content, learners and learning environment.

7. Develop and Select Instructional Materials: Choosing the instructional materials that will complement the specific learning strategy chosen.

8. Design and Conduct Formative Evaluation: Evaluating the effectiveness of the material through small groups to see if adjustments are needed.

9. Revise Instruction: Take the results and feedback from the evaluation to improve the materials for future learners.

10. Conduct Summative Evaluation: Gather data throughout the course to ensure that the learning module is working effectively, make changes as needed and to see if the learning objectives have been met.
IMPLICATIONS OF THE DICK AND CAREY MODEL IN INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
The Dick and Carey Model offers a step-by-step process that allows instructional designers to focus on each component to ensure that the learning objectives are being met through continually reviewing the learning module through assessments and feedback. The needs of the learners are always prioritized to ensure content is relevant. It is able to be used in a variety of content areas which allows for flexibility.

STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS IN GOVERNMENT/MILITARY TRAINING

alt=""
STRENGTHS
-
The step-by-step approach ensures that every aspect is analyzed and prevents gaps from happening when creating military training modules.
-
Assessments that are created allow for measurable understanding of the content.
-
It can be used by various units and tailored to the needs and prior knowledge of different soldiers.
LIMITATIONS
-
Each step is very involved and the creation of the material will not be done in a quick manner that some units may need a quick turn around time.
-
With a lot of military trainings being more hands on and not so structured this model may not be suitable for those that rely on more informal modes of instruction.
